Accessibility
Built for Every Learner
Most scripture memory apps get built first, then retrofitted for accessibility. We did it the other way around.
From the first line of code, HideTheWord was designed for learners with dyslexia, color vision deficiency, low vision, and those who rely on assistive technologies. Not as an afterthought. As a foundation.
Because the Word you're hiding in your heart deserves software that respects how you learn.
Accessibility Features
OpenDyslexic Font
A typeface designed specifically for readers with dyslexia. Letters have weighted bottoms to prevent rotation, unique shapes to reduce letter confusion, and increased spacing for easier tracking. Available throughout the entire app with a single tap.
Where to enable: Settings → Appearance → Font → OpenDyslexic
Color Blindness Palettes
We offer three color modes: Standard, Deuteranopia-safe (green-blindness), and Protanopia-safe (red-blindness). Every color palette was tested to ensure sufficient contrast. And critically: color is never the only way we communicate information. Visual indicators always include shape, position, or text labels.
Where to enable: Settings → Appearance → Color Vision Mode
Dynamic Type Support
Every piece of text in HideTheWord scales with your system text size preference. From labels to verse text to buttons. You set your preferred size once in iOS Settings, and HideTheWord respects it everywhere.
Where to adjust: iOS Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text
VoiceOver Support
Full support for Apple's VoiceOver screen reader. Every interactive element is properly labeled. Swipe gestures on flashcards have custom VoiceOver actions. State changes are announced clearly. You can navigate the entire app without seeing the screen.
Where to enable: iOS Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver
Reduce Motion
If you have "Reduce Motion" enabled in your device settings, HideTheWord respects it. Animations are replaced with smooth cross-fades. The experience stays polished without triggering motion sensitivity.
Where to enable: iOS Settings → Accessibility → Motion → Reduce Motion
Keyboard Navigation
Full keyboard support on iPad and Mac. Navigate between elements with Tab. Activate with Space or Return. Access common actions with keyboard shortcuts. You never have to reach for the mouse or trackpad.
First-Run Experience
When you first open HideTheWord, we offer accessibility options during onboarding. Choose your preferred font and color palette before you ever see a verse. You can also adjust these settings anytime.
Our Commitment
Accessibility isn't a checkbox. It's a practice. We test with real assistive technologies. We listen to feedback from users with different needs. And when we build new features, accessibility is part of the design from day one.
If you encounter an accessibility barrier in HideTheWord, please let us know. We take it seriously.
